Abstract

ABSTRACT
       Background and Objective: Anaerobic bacteria are the main cause of periodontitis. It has been shown that green tea and black tea have antibacterial effect. The aim of this study was to determine he antibacterial effect of Iranian green tea and black tea against Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia.
        Methods: Aqueous and methanolic extracts of Iranian green tea and black tea at concentrations ranging from 10 to 500 mg/ml were tested against standard strains of A. actinomycetemcomitans  (ATCC 33384), P. gingivalis (ATCC 33227) and P. intermedia (ATCC 25671) using agar disk diffusion, broth microdilution and determination of minimum inhibitory concentration.
         Results: P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. intermedia were sensitive to the methanolic extract of Iranian green tea at concentrations of 100-500 mg/ml, 10-500 mg/ml and 50-500mg/ml, respectively. P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. intermedia were sensitive to the methanolic extract of Iranian black tea at concentrations of 200-500 mg/ml, 20-500 mg/ml and 200-500 mg/ml, respectively. In addition, P. gingivalis, A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. intermedia were sensitive to the aquatic extract of Iranian green tea at concentrations of 200-500mg/ml, 100-500 mg/ml and 200-500 mg/ml, respectively.
        Conclusion: The aquatic and alcoholic extracts of Iranian green tea and black tea have antibacterial activity against A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. intermedia and P. gingivalis. Therefore, incorporation of Iranian black tea as an effective native herb could be beneficial for prevention of oral cavity diseases.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
           Background and Objective: Bilophlia spp. are gram-negative, pleomorphic rod, obligate anaerobe, oxidase-negative, catalase-positive and non-motile bacteria. B. wadsworthia is type species of genus Bilophila with the additional characteristic of urea hydrolysis. B. wadsworthia can be found in a variety of anaerobe infections, particularly appendicitis and intra-abdominal infection that are considered as important opportunistic pathogens.
           Methods: This study was designed to identify Bilophila spp. in clinical specimens by culture and PCR. We examined 91 DNA samples extracted from infected appendix tissues with specific primers.
           Results: Data showed that Bilophila spp. DNA existence in 53.85% (n=49) provided appendiceal tissue.
           Conclusion: The pathological and molecular examination of infected appendiceal tissues revealed that B. wadsworthia is able to act as the primary cause of significant lesions in the appendicle tissues.

Abstract

Background: Research has shown that the extract of some plants has an effective protective effect on liver cells against toxins and oxidants. In this research, the effect of hydroalcoholic extract of ginger against hepatotoxicity caused by doxorubicin (Dox) in adult male rats was investigated.
Methods: In this experimental study, 63 adult male rats were divided into 7 groups (n = 9 per group). The experimental treatments included the control and placebo groups without the use of medicines, experimental group I that received Dox at a dose of 20 mg/kg, experimental groups II and III with 300 and 600 mg/kg of ginger hydroalcoholic extract, and experimental groups IV and V that received 20 mg/kg Dox + 300 and 600 mg/kg of ginger hydroalcoholic extract, respectively. After the end of the test period, serum levels of total bilirubin and direct bilirubin were measured. In addition, the histological changes in the liver were examined after hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining.
Results: Serum levels of total bilirubin and direct bilirubin in the Dox group showed a significant increase compared to the control group. In contrast, serum levels of total bilirubin and direct bilirubin in Dox + ZIN 600 and Dox + ZIN 300  had a significant reduction compared to the Dox group (P < 0.05). Ginger extract prevented apoptosis and Dox-induced liver tissue damage in dose-dependent designs.
Conclusion: The hydroalcoholic extract of ginger improves the changes of serum bilirubin and liver tissue after receiving Dox due to its antioxidant compounds.
